Despite its title "Messa di Gloria" (which usually refers to just the first two parts of the Mass), Puccini actually composed a full Mass (Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus & Benedictus, and Agnus Dei).
Puccini came from a long line of church musicians—four generations of his ancestors were Maestri di Cappella in Lucca.
Crisantemi (Chrysanthemums) was written in a single night as an elegy for the Duke of Aosta. Puccini later reused its melodic themes in his famous opera, Manon Lescaut.
The Penguin Guide to Compact Discs praised this specific recording, noting that Antonio Pappano "easily outshines his rivals on disc" by enhancing the operatic elements within the score.
