Overview

Explore the surreal and avant-garde world of Hungary’s most enigmatic cult band with Kex: Let’s Cake. Released by Moiras Records, this compilation is a meticulously curated collection of the band's output between 1969 and 1971. Led by the charismatic and eccentric Baksa-Soós János, Kex was more than a rock band; they were a theatrical phenomenon that blended classic Hungarian poetry with progressive rock, jazz, and improvisational "happenings."

This limited-edition LP is a prized collector's item, hand-numbered and featuring authentic autographs on the cover. Because Kex was often at odds with the socialist cultural authorities, they were never allowed to record a full-length album during their existence. Let’s Cake serves as the definitive reconstruction of their legacy, featuring their few official singles alongside rare studio fragments and live recordings.

Interesting Facts

  • Poetic Fusion: Kex was famous for setting the works of iconic Hungarian poets like Attila József to rock music, bridging the gap between high literature and the underground youth scene.
  • Baksa-Soós János: The frontman was known for his unpredictable stage presence, often involving masks, storytelling, and audience interaction that made every concert a unique piece of performance art.
  • The "Kex" Name: The name "Kex" is a play on the Hungarian word for "biscuit" (keksz), chosen because the band wanted a name that sounded "light" and "pop-like" to contrast with their complex and often dark musical themes.
  • Suppressed Legacy: Despite being one of the most popular underground acts in Budapest, the state-run record company only released one single during their peak. Much of the audio on this LP was recovered from film soundtracks and private tapes that escaped the censors.

Overview (Magyar nyelven)
