Johann Sebastian Bach — Composer Biography

Johann Sebastian Bach (1685–1750) stands among the towering figures of Western music history. Born into a musical family in Eisenach, Germany, Bach’s prodigious talents led him to master composition, organ performance, and keyboard music. Serving as cantor at St. Thomas Church in Leipzig for nearly three decades, Bach composed a vast array of sacred and secular works that continue to inspire musicians worldwide.

His Well-Tempered Clavier is a landmark in the development of Western music. Composed as two books (1722 and 1742), it explores the possibilities of the well-tempered tuning system through 24 preludes and fugues in every major and minor key. This collection not only served as teaching material for keyboardists but also embodied Bach’s deep theological and artistic vision, reflecting the ordered beauty of creation and divine harmony.
