Overview

This remarkable album, recorded in the presence of Henri Dutilleux himself, is a musical homage led by his former pupil, conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen. It presents the world-premiere recording of Correspondances (2003) — Dutilleux’s late song cycle inspired by letters from Solzhenitsyn and Van Gogh — featuring Barbara Hannigan, one of today’s foremost interpreters of contemporary vocal music. Also included are fresh recordings of the composer’s celebrated cello concerto Tout un monde lointain… (1970) with Anssi Karttunen, and The Shadows of Time (1997), an evocative reflection on the 20th century and the diary of Anne Frank.

Interesting Facts

  • Correspondances was written for soprano Dawn Upshaw but first recorded here by Barbara Hannigan, whose dynamic range and precision have made her a benchmark for the work.
  • Tout un monde lointain…, originally composed for Mstislav Rostropovich, remains one of the most poetic cello concertos of the 20th century.
  • The Shadows of Time pays tribute to the victims of war and persecution, with three boy sopranos symbolizing lost innocence — a poignant reference to Anne Frank.
  • Conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen, a champion of Dutilleux’s music, studied with him in Paris and considered him a mentor and friend.
  • The cover art and liner design reflect Dutilleux’s fascination with texture, color, and “correspondence” between art forms.
