Overview

This comprehensive collection from Naxos brings together the most beloved orchestral works of Norway’s greatest composer, Edvard Grieg. The album features the iconic Peer Gynt Suites Nos. 1 and 2, which contain the world-famous "Morning" and "In the Hall of the Mountain King." Also included is the elegant Holberg Suite, written in the "olden style," the stirring Sigurd Jorsalfar pieces, and the charming Wedding Day at Troldhaugen. Performed with precision and passion by the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and the Bournemouth Sinfonietta, this CD is a perfect introduction to Grieg's lyrical and folk-inspired Romanticism.

Interesting Facts

  • The InspirationPeer Gynt was originally incidental music for Henrik Ibsen’s 1867 play. Grieg eventually extracted the most popular movements into the two suites heard on this disc.
  • National Identity: Grieg was a leading figure in the Nationalist movement in music, using Norwegian folk melodies to help create a distinct cultural identity for his homeland.
  • The Cover Art: The booklet features a stage design for Peer Gynt by Paul Sträter, created for the first performance at the Berlin State Opera, perfectly capturing the rugged, mystical landscape of the play.
  • Troldhaugen: "Wedding Day at Troldhaugen" was written to commemorate Grieg's own 25th wedding anniversary. Troldhaugen (Troll Hill) was the name of his home in Bergen.
