Overview

This Naxos recording pairs two of Alexander Glazunov’s most enduring works, representing the peak of Russian late-Romanticism. "The Seasons" (Op. 67) is an allegorical one-act ballet that remains a cornerstone of the repertoire, famed for its shimmering orchestration and melodic charm. It is coupled with the Violin Concerto in A minor (Op. 82), a work of profound lyricism and technical brilliance performed here by the multi-award-winning violinist Ilya Kaler. This disc captures the lush, Tchaikovsky-influenced style that made Glazunov one of the most respected musical figures in Imperial Russia.

Interesting Facts

  • The Ballet CollaborationThe Seasons was a collaboration between Glazunov and the legendary choreographer Marius Petipa. It premiered in 1900 at the Imperial Theatre of the Hermitage in St. Petersburg with the entire Imperial Court in attendance.
  • The Dedicated Violinist: The Violin Concerto is dedicated to Leopold Auer, the teacher of many of the 20th century’s greatest violinists. Interestingly, Glazunov initially struggled with the composition, writing to Rimsky-Korsakov that he feared the music might be "rubbish."
  • World-Class Soloist: Ilya Kaler is the only violinist to win gold medals at three of the world's most prestigious competitions: the Tchaikovsky, Sibelius, and Paganini competitions.
  • The Cover Art: The cover features a winter landscape painting by the composer himself, Alexander Glazunov, illustrating his multi-faceted artistic talent beyond just music.
