- A Work of Transformations: Haydn originally composed "The Seven Last Words" in 1786 as an orchestral work for the Good Friday service at the Oratorio de la Santa Cueva in Cádiz, Spain. Due to its immense popularity, he later arranged it for string quartet and for piano. It wasn't until 1796, after hearing a choral arrangement by Joseph Friebert that he felt could be improved, that Haydn created this definitive oratorio version (Hob. XX:2) featuring lyrics by Baron Gottfried van Swieten.
