English Summary:

Fantômas (French pronunciation: ​[fɑ̃tomas]) is a 1964 French comedy film starring Jean Marais as the arch villain with the same name opposite Louis de Funès as the earnest but outclassed commissaire Paul Juve. In the film Juve teams up with journalist Fandor, also played by Marais, trying to catch Fantômas but never quite succeeding. It was France's answer, in 1964, to the James Bond phenomenon that swept the world at around the same time. It is the first film of a trilogy, and Fantômas became extremely successful in Europe, the Soviet Union and Japan. It found success even in the United States, where fan websites exist to this day. Mylène Demongeot plays "Hélène Gurn", the girlfriend of "Jérôme Fandor", Fantômas' arch enemy. The general tone of the films is more light-hearted than the original Fantômas novels. Commissaire Juve, as played by Louis de Funès, becomes a comedic character, much unlike his literary counterpart.

Fantomas, az arctalan, vagy inkább ezerarcú mester-bűnöző egy tökéletesen végrehajtott ékszerlopás helyszínén hagyja a névjegyét, Juve felügyelő azonban kétségbe vonja, hogy létezik a titokzatos gazember, és egy tévé-nyilatkozatban ennek hangot is ad.
A nyilvánosság azonban felkapja a sztorit, és a nagy érdeklődés hullámait meglovagolva egy újságíró, bizonyos Fandor hamis interjút is készít a fantom-bűnözővel.
Fantomas azonban nem nézi jó szemmel az álinterjút, ezért elrabolja Fandort, és amíg fogságban tartja az újságírót, Fandor arcával hajt végre egy újabb rafinált bűntényt.
Fantomas azonban nem úszhatná meg gaztetteit, ha legnagyobb ellenfele, Juve felügyelő nem lenne az, aki: kétballábas, ügyetlen, idegroncs pukkancs...

Fort de ses méfaits passés, Fantômas a l'idée d'extorquer par la menace, aux individus les plus fortunés de la planète, un « impôt sur le droit de vivre ». Edward Mac Rashley, un richissime lord écossais, subit ce chantage. Le commissaire Juve, son adjoint l'inspecteur Bertrand, le journaliste Fandor et sa fiancée Hélène, dépêchés par le grand quotidien Le Point du Jour, sont invités dans son château pour confondre le coupable. Sous les traits d'un ami intime de Mac Rashley qu'il vient d'assassiner, Fantômas tue le lord écossais. Puis il endosse son apparence, à l'insu de tous. De plus, il fait passer Juve pour fou en déposant dans sa chambre puis en les subtilisant peu après les cadavres de ses deux victimes.
