Overview

This exceptional release from the cpo label brings much-needed attention to the orchestral works of the Swedish modernist Dag Wirén. Under the baton of the renowned conductor Thomas Dausgaard, the Norrköping Symphony Orchestra delivers powerful performances of Wirén’s Symphonies No. 2 and No. 3, alongside two of his energetic Concert Overtures.

Dag Wirén is best known for his "Serenade for Strings," but his symphonies reveal a composer of great depth and formal ingenuity. This recording, captured using advanced 20-bit digital technology, provides a clear and expansive soundstage that highlights Wirén’s characteristic rhythmic drive and clear, Nordic textures. His "metamorphosis technique"—where an entire work grows from a small musical seed—is perfectly demonstrated in these mid-career masterpieces. It is an essential listen for fans of Sibelius, Nielsen, and 20th-century Scandinavian music.

Interesting Facts

  • The "Swedish Mozart": Early in his career, Wirén was sometimes called the "Swedish Mozart" due to the clarity and neo-classical elegance of his music, though his symphonies explore a much more rugged, modernist landscape.
  • Metamorphosis Technique: Wirén was famous for his strict "organic" approach to composition. He famously said, "I believe in the cell... the smallest unit from which everything grows."
  • Cover Art: The beautiful cover painting is titled "Norrländsk sommarnatt" (Northland Summer Night) by Otte Sköld, courtesy of the Norrköping Konstmuseum. It perfectly captures the atmospheric, brooding nature of Wirén’s orchestration.
  • The Artist: Conductor Thomas Dausgaard is a leading authority on Scandinavian repertoire. His collaboration with the Norrköping Symphony Orchestra on this disc is part of cpo's widely praised initiative to record neglected Nordic gems.
