- Three cornerstone works by Debussy: the sensuous Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune, the virtuosic 1re Rhapsodie pour clarinette, and the elusive ballet-poème Jeux.
- Performed by the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra under Serge Baudo, with André Boutard as clarinet soloist.
- Recorded in Prague’s House of Artists, capturing the orchestra’s luminous strings and the varnished elegance of Supraphon’s stereo engineering.
- Published by Durand Editions, preserving Debussy’s original dynamics and articulation markings.
Overview
This Supraphon LP brings together Debussy’s most evocative orchestral soundscapes. The Prélude (1894) conjures the languid haze of Mallarmé’s poetry as the faun lounges amidst flirtatious nymphs. The 1re Rhapsodie pour clarinette (1910–11), premiered as an exam piece at the Paris Conservatoire, spotlights the clarinet’s sensuous timbre in Debussy’s hallmark “dreamily slow” opening and exuberant finale. The ballet-poème Jeux (1913), though a stage failure in its Diaghilev premiere, reveals razor-sharp chamber textures and Debussyan harmonies in a twilight tennis game. Serge Baudo’s lucid conducting and André Boutard’s creamy tone render these works with shimmering precision.
