Megelégelve a bűnt, egy egzotikus karibi nyugdíjas életről álmodoznak. Utolsó bevetésük azonban tragédiába torkollik, amikor a kegyetlen rablógyilkos, Schneider végez Simonnal. Stan magához veszi társa árván maradt kisfiát, és hét éven át tartó türelemmel várja a pillanatot, hogy újra felbukkanjon barátja gyilkosa, és végre törlessze régi adósságát.

French Summary:

A Paris, le commissaire Stan Jalard (Jean-Paul Belmondo) et l'inspecteur Simon Lecache (Michel Creton) envisagent de quitter la police pour partir mener une existence plus paisible aux Antilles. Dans une boîte de nuit, en faisant une visite de routine, ils repèrent Schneider, truand redoutable et ennemi public n° 1. Au moment de l’appréhender, Simon se fait tuer à bout portant par le criminel. Stan décide alors de rester dans la police pour venger Simon. Étant le parrain de Christian, fils de Simon, qui vit tantôt en pension, tantôt chez lui, il prend en charge son éducation. Deux ans ont passé et Stan est à la tête de l'Office Central de Répression du Banditisme (OCRB) lorsqu'on lui signale que Schneider a refait surface dans la Capitale. Une longue traque commence.
