Overview

"Este a Székelyeknél: An Evening in the Village" is a beautiful piece by Béla Bartók, originally composed for piano and later transcribed for harp by Pál Járdányi. This delicate transcription brings Bartók's evocation of rural Hungarian life to the harp, adding a unique and expressive tonal quality to the work. Published by Editio Musica Budapest, this edition (Z. 4706) is an essential addition for harpists interested in expanding their repertoire with folk-inspired classical pieces.

The piece captures the tranquil and nostalgic essence of a quiet evening in a rural village, typical of Bartók's affinity for folk themes and his dedication to preserving the musical heritage of Hungary. Pál Járdányi's transcription remains faithful to the spirit of the original, making this work both challenging and rewarding for harpists of an advanced level.

An Evening in the Village was composed in 1908 as no. 5 of the Ten Easy Piano Pieces. It has become one of Bartók's favorite works, which the composer himself was fond of playing at recitals. As he explained in an American interview, it was ''an original composition that is (...) with themes of my own invention but (...) the themes are in the style of the Hungarian-Transylvanian folk tunes. There are two themes. The first one is a parlando-rubato-rhythm and the second one is more in a dance-like rhythm. The second one is more or less the imitation of a peasant flute playing.'' Bartók also orchestrated the piece in 1931 as no. 1 of Hungarian Sketches.
