Overview: Ferenc Erkel's Epic National Opera on Film

This DVD presents the visually stunning 2002 film adaptation of Ferenc Erkel's iconic Hungarian opera, Bánk bán, based on the historical play by József Katona.

Set in Hungary in 1213, the drama unfolds while King Andrew II is away at war. His wife, Queen Gertrude of Merania, rules the country and bestows privileges on her foreign favorites. As the country sinks into poverty, the Hungarian nobility plots a scheme. Meanwhile, Prince Otto, Gertrude’s brother, attempts to seduce Melinda, the beautiful wife of Bánk bán (the king's viceroy/palatine). The film captures Bánk bán's confrontation with the corruption of the court and the ultimate betrayal of his nation and his marriage.

The film version of Ferenc Erkel's opera was photographed by the renowned cinematographer Vilmos Zsigmond.
