Overview

Alexander Glazunov was among the most influential Russian composers and teachers of his era, bridging the gap between late-Romanticism and the twentieth century while shunning modernism. This Naxos release features his two Piano Concertos, which are fine examples of a lyrical style familiar to fans of Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov. Performed by the renowned pianist Oxana Yablonskaya and the Moscow Symphony Orchestra, the album also includes the collaborative Variations on a Russian Theme, a unique work composed in honor of conductor Nikolay Galkin.

Interesting Facts

  • A Lyrical Legacy: Glazunov's piano concertos are noted for demanding a high degree of virtuosity while remaining set in an intensely lyrical context.
  • The "Seasons" Composer: Beyond his concertos, Glazunov is perhaps best known for his prodigiously popular ballet The Seasons and his nine symphonies.
  • Collaborative Variations: The Variations on a Russian Theme included on this disc features contributions from several major Russian composers, including Rimsky-Korsakov and Lyadov.
  • Family Collaboration: This recording features a mother-son collaboration; soloist Oxana Yablonskaya is the mother of conductor Dmitry Yablonsky.
  • Cover Art: The cover features the painting "Trees by a Stream" (1837) by Alexander Andreyevich Ivanov, held at the State Russian Museum in St. Petersburg.
