Some books are dipped into or skimmed through; some are read thoroughly, but only once; others are purchased, kept and reread through the years. Dr. W.H. Griffith Thomas' books are in the last category. Anyone whose books are still in print and widely used half a century after death is a special author. Griffith Thomas is a special author to me for several reasons. When I was a student at Bible college, my older brother gave me three or four of Griffith Thomas' books before leaving for the jungles of Ecuador as a missionary. Little did I realize that later I would get master's and doctor's degrees as well as teach at the school he co-founded, The Evangelical Theological College, whose British-style name (suggested by Griffith Thomas) was changed to the now-well-known Dallas Theological Seminary. Also, little did I know that I would help mount a large display of Griffith Thomas' books, awards, photographs and other memorabilia at Mosher Library during the famous annual Griffith Thomas lectureship at Dallas Seminary. It is notable that a sister lectureship by the same name has been established at Wycliffe Hall, Oxford, of which he was principal from 1905 to 1910. It was through work on this display in Dallas that I came to know very well the author's daughter, Mrs. Winifred G.T. Gillespie. She was later to become a communicant and a pillar of our church in Dallas, and a co-worker in the production of the New King James Bible. She has edited many of Griffith Thomas' posthumous volumes.
