George Gömöri and I have been translating Hungarian poems into English for something like forty-seven years. In 2014 I compiled this selection from our work as a way of celebrating George's eightieth birthday. It is therefore a personal anthology. It is not representative of modern Hun- garian poetry. It is not even, strictly speaking, a balanced sample of our work. It simply assembles those of our trans- lations that I personally think read best as English poems. It also provides me with an opportunity to thank George for introducing me to a body of poetry that, without our friendship, I would probably never have read. The canon of Hungarian poetry must surely be among the very greatest of modern Europe.
