JOSEPH MOST JUST was written to make available in English some of the developments in Catholic theology concerning St. Joseph's dignity, holiness, and privileges. This is intended to be more than a  devotional book. It should provide a solid theological basis for devotion to St. Joseph, without becoming so technical as to be of use only to professional theologians. Material already presented in The Man Nearest to Christ and Joseph and Jesus is not repeated here except where necessary by way of summary. However, to complement the historical data in The Man Nearest to Christ, the appendix offers a survey of the history of the devotion to St. Joseph since the middle 1500's, the period of the Council of Trent. This book was made possible because of the literature at the Research and Documentation Center, St. Joseph's Oratory, Montreal, which was generously put at my disposal by the Reverend Emile Deguire, C.S.C., Superior of St. Joseph's Oratory. My deep gratitude is also extended to the Reverend
