Sonatine is a piano work written by Maurice Ravel. Although Ravel wrote in his autobiography that he wrote the sonatina after his piano suite Miroirs, it seems to have been written between 1903 and 1905. He most likely referred to the dates he finished both of the works.
The Valses nobles et sentimentales is a suite of waltzes composed by Maurice Ravel. The piano version was published in 1911, and an orchestral version was published in 1912. The title was chosen in homage to Franz Schubert, who had released collections of waltzes in 1823 entitled Valses nobles and Valses sentimentales. The piano edition is published with a quotation of Henri de Régnier: "…le plaisir délicieux et toujours nouveau d'une occupation inutile" (the delicious and forever-new pleasure of a useless occupation).
The suite contains an eclectic blend of Impressionist and Modernist music, which is especially evident in the orchestrated version.
Gaspard de la nuit (subtitled Trois poèmes pour piano d'après Aloysius Bertrand), M. 55 is a suite of piano pieces by Maurice Ravel, written in 1908. It has three movements, each based on a poem or fantaisie from the collection Gaspard de la Nuit – Fantaisies à la manière de Rembrandt et de Callot completed in 1836 by Aloysius Bertrand. The work was premiered in Paris, on January 9, 1909, by Ricardo Viñes.
The piece is famous for its difficulty, partly because Ravel intended the Scarbo movement to be more difficult than Balakirev's Islamey. Because of its technical challenges and profound musical structure, Scarbo is considered one of the most difficult solo piano pieces in the standard repertoire.
The manuscript currently resides in the Harry Ransom Center of the University of Texas at Austin.
Menuet sur le nom d'Haydn is a minuet for solo piano written by Maurice Ravel in 1909 to mark the centenary of Joseph Haydn's death.
Dezső Ránki (born 8 September 1951) is a Hungarian virtuoso concert pianist with a broad repertoire and a significant discography of solo, duo and concerto works.

Zenei tanulmányait Domokos Kingánál és Máthé Kláránál kezdte, majd a budapesti Liszt Ferenc Zeneművészeti Főiskolán folytatta, ahol 1973-ban szerzett diplomát Kadosa Pál és Rados Ferenc növendékeként. Még tanulóévei alatt, 1969-ben, tizennyolc évesen nyerte el a Zwickaui Nemzetközi Schumann Verseny I. díját, ez idő óta koncertezik világszerte.
Rendszeresen fellépett Európa legtöbb országában, több ízben Észak- és Dél-Amerikában és 2-3 évente Japánban. Játszott többek között a Berlini Filharmonikusokkal, a Londoni Filharmonikusokkal, az amszterdami Concertgebouw zenekarával, a párizsi Orchestre Nationallal, a tokiói NHK zenekarával, és számos neves karmesterrel, többek között Solti Györggyel, Végh Sándorral, Lorin Mazellel és Zubin Mehtával.
Jelentős szerepet játszik életében a kamarazene. Több, mint két évtizede itthon és külföldön egyaránt rendszeresen koncertezik Klukon Edittel, eljátszották a négykezes, illetve kétzongorás irodalom legnagyobb részét. Lemezre vették Satie Socrate-jának kétzongorás és Liszt Via Crucis-ának négykezes változatát.
Ránki Dezső számos elismerésben részesült, 1973-ban Liszt-díjat, 1978-ban és 2008-ban Kossuth-díjat, 1988-ban Bartók-Pásztory-díjat kapott. 1984-ben Érdemes Művész, 1990-ben Kiváló Művész lett. 2005-ben Prima Primissima Díjat, 2007-ben pedig Magyar Művészetért Díjat nyert.
