Dotzauer was a trained musician who wrote an opera, symphonies, overtures, a Mass, concertos and chamber music. Of his extensive life-work the abundance of educational compositions has proved to be of lasting value in the first place. The idea to compile and publish a selection from his educational life-work that meets the demands of the time emerged at the end of the 19th century already. Of the several publications of this kind the work by Johannes Klingenberg has turned out to be the most successful.
Dotzauer képzett muzsikus volt, operát, szimfóniákat, nyitányokat, misét, versenyműveket és kamarazenét komponált. Életművéből elsősorban nagy mennyiségű pedagógiai munkája bizonyult maradandónak. Már a XIX. század végén felmerült a gondolat, hogy a hatalmas pedagógiai életműből a kor igényének megfelelő válogatás jelenjék meg. Több ilyen jellegű kiadvány közül a mai napig az egyik legsikeresebb Johannes Klingenberg munkája.
