Ildiko Ivan began her musical career as a flutist, and received her diploma at the Debrecen division of the Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music, where she was taught by Istvan Matuz. Four years later at the same place, she received her degree as a singer, after being the student of Adrienne Szterszky and Endre Dekany. Her first operatic contract was with the Csokonai Theater in Debrecen. Her international career began already in 1984, after earning first prize and special award at the Karlovy Vary Singing Competition, and later, third place at the Sophia Singing Competition. Soon after, she was invited to the Sophia Music Festival, where she sang the role of Gilda along with Giuseppe Taddei, where she proved once again to be a great success. In the same year, she won the grand prix of the Cziffra Foundation, after which she was invited to a number of French concerts. She became a regular guest singer at the Hungarian State Opera, singing such notable roles as Lucia di Lammermoor, Olympia, Fior-diligi, Melinda and Micaela. In Stuttgart, 1988, she won first place at the Geszty Sylvia Coloratura Competition. Afterwards, she gained a Europe-wide reputation as the vocal artist of the Bonn Opera. She worked with such notable conductors as Sylvio Varviso, Dennis Russel Davis, Waclaw Neumann, Stefan Soltesz, Udo Zimmermann and Gianfranco Massini, and also with vocal partners as Edita Gruberova, Juan Pons, Anna Tomowa-Sintow, Graham Clark and Gössta Winberg. She appeared once again in Hungary in 1994 at the Rigoletto performance on Margit sziget. Currently, she is a popular soprano of the Hungarian music life, a regular guest of various opera companies, an oratorio soloist and a noted performer of contemporary music literature.
