The volume takes Hungarian decorative elements one by one: roses, tulips, carnations, cornflowers, leaves, leaf flowers, peacock feathers. Stylized animal forms also appear among the elements. In addition to the woven ones, the sheets come to life with the extremely rich, yet spectacular design of the cypress filter, the suba, the ködmön. Decorations of ceramics and smaller household items - shepherd's trinkets, whip handles, salt shakers - can also be found on the sample sheets.
The merit of the volume is that it briefly presents and explains the individual decorative types. The author provides a guide for the individual use of the samples, explains how it is advisable to enlarge and assemble the samples.
By republishing the now classic book published in Cluj-Napoca in 1940, TINTA Könyvkiadó wants to ensure that more and more people use these ancient motifs even today. The 175 expertly compiled sample sheets of István Tóth's book Basic forms of Hungarian decoration help with this.

A kötet sorra veszi a magyar díszítőelemeket: rózsa, tulipán, szegfű, búzavirág, levelek, levélvirág, pávatoll. Megjelennek az elemek között a stilizált állatformák is. A lapokon megelevenedik a szőttesek mellett a cifraszűr, a suba, a ködmön rendkívül gazdag, egyszerűségében is roppant látványos formakincse. A kerámiák és a kisebb használati tárgyak - pásztorholmik, ostornyelek, sótartók - díszítéseit is megtaláljuk a mintalapokon.
A kötet érdeme, hogy az egyes díszítő típusokat röviden szövegesen is bemutatja és magyarázza. A szerző útmutatót ad a minták egyéni felhasználásához, ismerteti, miként célszerű nagyítani, összetenni a mintákat.
