English Summary:

Super Mario Bros. is a 1993 American fantasy adventure film based loosely on the Mario video game series by Nintendo. The film was directed by the husband-and-wife team of Rocky Morton and Annabel Jankel, written by Parker Bennett, Terry Runté and Ed Solomon, and distributed by Walt Disney Studios through Hollywood Pictures. Its story follows the Mario brothers (Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo) in their quest to rescue Princess Daisy (Samantha Mathis) from a dystopic parallel universe ruled by the ruthless President Koopa (Dennis Hopper).

The setting was inspired by Super Mario World (1990) with other elements drawn from fairy tales and contemporary American culture. Given free creative license by Nintendo, the screenwriters envisioned the film as a subversive comedy with a "weird and dark" tone similar to Ghostbusters (1984). Super Mario Bros. was shot in New York City and North Carolina on a budget of $48 million. It was released on May 28, 1993 and was a critical and commercial failure. Reviewers praised the film's innovative special effects, creative artistic direction, and the performances of its actors, but criticized the confusing narrative and inconsistent tone. Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto commented that while he enjoyed the effort that was put into the film, he felt that the end result tried too hard to replicate the game series.

Despite garnering a reputation as one of the worst films ever made, Super Mario Bros. gained a cult following in later years. In 2012, a webcomic sequel was produced by fans in collaboration with Parker Bennett. As of 2018, another feature-length Mario film is in development by Universal Pictures through Illumination with Miyamoto being co-producer.

Amerikában 1993. május 23-án mutatták be a mozikban, Magyarországon 2004. január 2-án az M1-en vetítették le a televízióban.
