The first edition of the translation of the New Testament books, prepared by KP Pobedonostsev, was published in 1906, the second edition - in the year of the translator's death. Pobedonostsev called this work his "testament to the Russian reader." According to Pobedonostsev, to translate the Slavic speech of the Gospel into everyday Russian means to spoil it, and “to shift it by paraphrasing means to disfigure it with the danger of discrediting the pure and belitating the sublime”. However, Pobedonostsev recognized the need to have a Russian translation of the Gospel.

Constantine Petrovich Pobedonostsev (Russian: Константин Петрович Победоносцев) was a Russian jurist, statesman, adviser to three Tsars and Ober-Procurator of the Holy Synod for twenty seven years, the highest position of supervision of the Church of Russia by the state.  He was usually regarded as a prime representative of reactionary views in the late nineteenth century.
