A nemzetközi viszonylatban is úttörő vállalkozásnak nevezhető közel 400 oldalas lexikon a 19. század folyamán Magyarország területén használt nyomdai és kiadói jelvényeket adja közre. Számos helyen pontosítja és kiegészíti a 2009-ben megjelent 15–18. századi jelvénykatalógust, majd következik a 19. századi törzsanyag. A 345 jelvény mérethű reprodukciója alatt angol–magyar kétnyelvű szócikk tartalmazza az ábrázolásra, annak készítőjére, illetve az adott kiadóra vagy nyomdára vonatkozó információkat.

Szintén kétnyelvű bevezető tanulmányában a szerző részletesen tárgyalja a korszak jelvényeinek ikonográfiai jellegzetességeit, az ábrázolások forrásait és stílusjegyeit, használatuk időtartamát, pozicionálásukat, az utánzásokat, a felhasznált jelmondatokat, illetve az alkalmazott technikákat. Megemlíti azokat a jelvényeket is, amelyeket kizárólag külföldön használtak olyan nyomdászok vagy könyvkereskedők, akiknek életpályája részben Magyarországhoz kötődik.

A kötetet haszonnal forgathatják a nyomdászattörténettel, kiadástörténettel vagy művelődéstörténettel foglalkozó szakemberek és diákok, de a szimbolika iránt érdeklődőknek is tartogathat néhány kellemes percet.

English Description:

This encyclopaedia of around 400 pages breaks fresh ground on an international scale. It contains the printers’ and publishers’ devices used in Hungary in the 19th century. It refines and completes the previous catalogue which appeared in 2009 and which treated the 15th–18th centuries. The 345 devices from the 19th century are reproduced in their original sizes, each is accompanied with an article in Hungarian and in English. The text contains information on the design, the artist (if known) and the publisher or printer who used the device.

In the likewise bilingual introductory study the author discusses in detail the iconographic characteristics of the marks of the period, the sources and the style of the images, the interval of their use, their place of use, the counterfeit devices, the mottoes and the techniques used. She also mentions those devices which were used exclusively abroad by printers or publishers who were partly active in Hungary.

The volume will be useful for professionals and students in the history of printing, in the history of publishing or in cultural history but it has in store several pleasant moments for those interested in symbolism, too.
