English Description:

Information on 24 of the best birding sites in Hungary (location, species, status and season). Birdwatching map of Hungary. Appendix: Check-list and dictionary of Hungarian birds.

A bird guide to Hungary divided by geographical area with black & white drawings of some of the species and maps of the birdwatching sites. Also includes a "Check-list and Dictionary of Hungarian Birds" with the names in English, Latin and Hungarian and the distribution status.

Before arriving in Hungary in 1985 my interest in birdwatching was beginning to wane. Perhaps it was due to two years spent in Italy, where the only person who ever showed any ornithological slant as a student who presented me with two freshly shot Snipe at the end of her language course. Their bills had been neatly snipped off [sic]: no doubt they had been recorded in this way by someone or other.

Whatever the reason, my interest was soon rekindled, or rather it flamed up, once I had seen my first Magyar White Storks peering nonchalantly down at me from over the side of their huge nest. Or was it the magnificent Black Woodpecker that hacked chunks off a beech on János-hegy in Buda, whilst below him cars and buses wound up the hill in ignorance? And this just ten minutes from where I sit now.
